Smoking is the single greatest avoidable cause of disease and death. Because it is such a major health issue, the Vilas County Tobacco Free Coalition was formed under the auspices of the Vilas County Public Health Department. It is funded from the tobacco lawsuit settlement and monitored by the Department of Health. The Coalition's first meeting was held in Eagle River on January 9, 2001. Since then, the Coalition has been very active.
The activities of the Coalition include:
- Conduct epidemiological studies.
- Promote the Quit Line.
- Develop media relations.
- Educate the public about clean indoor air.
- Youth education and advocacy.
- Coordinate with the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI)
- Implement a comprehensive policy addressing tobacco use among a disparate population.
- Work at the state and local level in anti-tobacco advocacy initiatives.
- Interact with local and state leaders to keep them informed about our anti-tobacco advocacy efforts and our needs.
To join the coalition, call the Tobacco Prevention Specialist at 715-479-3656.
