Larger lodging facililties of over 31 sleeping rooms will be inspected by the Vilas County Environmental Health Specialist.

Licenses
If you are renting out your home (private or vacation), or serving food to the public, you need to be licensed by the state. Rates vary due to the complexity of the facility. Starting in 2010 all persons operating a public facility without a license will be subject to a $750.00 fine.
Water Tests
A water test for bacteria and nitrate should be done yearly. This can be done right through the Public Health Department. The Department can provide a kit to you to take the sample at a cost $12.00 per sample, or a water specialist can come out and take the samples for you at $15.00 per sample. It is recommended the test be be done by an experienced water tester to minimize the chance of false positives.
Well Tests
To set up a well test or inspection, or if you have any questions call the Public Health Department at 715-479-3656 or send an email.
